Individual Taken into Custody In the Wake of a Minimum of 50 Rounds Let Off from Croydon Park Home

A man in his sixties was taken into custody after one individual sustained a gunshot wound, numerous people injured and multiple cars fired upon by a shooter within the inner western suburbs of Sydney.

Up to 100 shots rang out over a two hour window starting at 7:45 PM and ending around 9:30 PM on Sunday within the Croydon Park locality.

Law Enforcement Begin Substantial Action

Streets were closed and the vicinity was secured under lockdown following the start of a significant police operation after reports a suspect was haphazardly discharging a weapon in the direction of passing vehicles, encompassing law enforcement automobiles, travelling along Georges River Road.

Specialist police teams were deployed to detain an individual in his sixties from an apartment situated over a shop on the heavily trafficked street.

Police Leadership Provide Details

Superintendent Stephen Parry in an acting capacity informed the press late Sunday the exact number was uncertain exactly how many shots were fired “however, it's possible there were in the range of 50 to 100 bullets which were shot”.

He stated multiple cars and buildings sustained gunshots and damage throughout the event, though a more detailed understanding was expected to emerge by morning.

The NSW police commissioner, Mal Lanyon stated officers' body cameras showed the proximity of officers to being struck while they sought shelter amid the "critical and alarming situation".

“It's possible to hear a multitude of firearm discharges, along with definite impacts, not too far from the camera,” Lanyon told 2GB radio in Sydney on Monday morning.

One of the officers shot at had only been out of the academy five weeks, Lanyon mentioned.

The motivation for the gunfire has not been established though Lanyon stated no association was found to any terrorism or gang activity.

Harm and Fallout

Ambulance crews cared for sixteen individuals on site suffering from minor wounds.

• Certain individuals were hurt by shattered glass when their windows were struck by bullets.
• Others were treated for shock.

A number of people were taken to hospital after being treated by paramedics.

A taxi driver in his 50s was critically but steadily positioned suffering from injuries to his neck and head.

Unprecedented Incident for the Region

It came down to chance that more people weren’t hurt, Trent King, the acting assistant commissioner stated.

“This is unheard of in Sydney to have something like this, involving such an extensive volume of gunfire,” he told the ABC radio station on Monday.

“We are extremely lucky that further destruction was avoided and certainly more injuries or indeed fatalities.”

King stated it must have been frightening for the community and the police who responded.

“To clarify those initial police were fired upon. Law enforcement automobiles incurred harm and we’re very fortunate that no police have been injured.”

Arrested Individual in Detention

The 60-year-old man was held by authorities in Bankstown hospital and was due to be interrogated and formally accused on Monday.

Guns, such as a large-caliber rifle, were taken into custody upon his detention, authorities claimed.

Eyewitness Report

A person present during the gunfire reported to the ABC he was passing through and “listened to a series of bangs along the left side of the taxi”.

“Then, I observed adjacent to me, and I spotted a few openings on the passenger-side window,” he mentioned.

“It escaped my notice that the roof had a hole too. I detected the scent of gunpowder, but I assumed since it was the night of the NRL grand final, [it was] somebody throwing firecrackers or something.”
