Gerrard in frame for Rangers comeback after Martin is dismissed.

Steven Gerrard is under serious review for a surprise reappointment to the Scottish giants following the official dismissal of manager the ex-Swansea boss.

His ill-fated spell at Rangers ends

Martin's troubled period in Glasgow finished with the boss departing the Falkirk Stadium via a back exit and a vehicle on standby after a share of the points which left Rangers 11 points from the peak of Scotland’s top flight after just seven fixtures.

Incensed supporters had surrounded the club coach in the stadium location, showing their discontent.

Ibrox directors hesitant to dismiss the manager

The club directors had been unwilling to let go of the coach, who was only hired in June, despite vociferous objections from fans.

However, there was an realization that the coach's role had become untenable.

The team have secured just a single victory of their top-flight games to date, which has been coupled with poor performances in Europe.

Collectively, the manager secured just five victories of 17 competitive matches, with a lackluster, unclear brand of football that won over few admirers.

“Even though changeovers require some time, performances have fallen short of the team's standards,” stated a Rangers statement on Sunday night.

“Deputy manager Gill, and first-team coach Mike Williamson, will also be leaving. Martin and his coaching team have put in tremendous effort throughout their time at the club. We thank them for their work and send best wishes for the next chapter.”

Gerrard secured the championship with Rangers

The former England captain secured the championship with the Ibrox side in the 2020-21 season, their lone triumph since 2011.

His performance in the Scottish league before then, combined with struggles at Villa, creates uncertainty about his coaching abilities.

Yet he is highly regarded by the very set of fans the club urgently require back on side.

The reappointment of the Anfield legend, who last managed in the Middle East, would be widely welcomed.

The manager will also be conscious of what scarce chances he has to be a manager in major divisions.

The departure will increase pressure on Kevin Thelwell

The coaching change will increase pressure on Thelwell, the Ibrox director.

He had been very backing of the coach while disclosing a net spend of £20m in the transfer window.

Martin had put pen to paper on a long-term deal.

Martin's past roles

The manager, who had formerly managed the League One side and the Swans, managed the Saints to promotion to the top flight in the previous season after being hired the prior offseason.

He was let go last December after the the club secured just a single victory of their opening 16 fixtures.

He was appointed the former captain's next in line in last month, after the interim head coach had taken over from the sacked Philippe Clement in winter.
