Football Roundup: Denver Stage Fourth-Quarter Rally Against Philadelphia, Ravens Endure Historic Home-field Defeat
Denver Broncos 21–17 Philadelphia Eagles
Bo Nix found a short scoring throw and JK Dobbins added another ground touchdown in the fourth quarter as the Broncos erased a 14-point deficit to deliver the Philadelphia Eagles their initial defeat of the season. Denver's defense batted down Jalen Hurts' last-gasp pass on the contest's last snap to send the Super Bowl champions to just their second defeat in their last 22 games. The Broncos (3-2) caught a huge break in their comeback when the Philadelphia had a crucial play nullified on an illegal shift penalty called on star ball carrier Barkley.
Texans Dominate Depleted Ravens in Record Win
Houston's quarterback passed for 244 passing yards and four scoring throws, and Houston (two wins and three losses) strolled to a 44-10 win over a depleted Baltimore team, equaling both the most lopsided road win in Texans' history and the most lopsided home loss in Ravens' history. Baltimore (1-4) were without star signal-caller Jackson, and that was not their sole issue. Key defenders Kyle Hamilton, Roquan Smith and Marlon Humphrey all were absent, and the Baltimore already were weakened on defense because of a neck problem that ended Nnamdi Madubuike's season. The Ravens were also missing Pro Bowl blocker Ricard and tackle Ronnie Stanley.
Las Vegas Raiders 6–40 Indianapolis Colts
Jonathan Taylor scored three touchdowns and a two-pointer, and the quarterback passed for two touchdown passes as the Colts routed the Raiders. The 34-point margin was Indianapolis' largest since the 2013 season. Jones completed 20 of 29 for 212 yards and moved to four wins and one loss as the starting quarterback this year, surpassing his combined victory total over the past two seasons with the New York Giants. The running back rushed 17 attempts for 66 rushing yards and grabbed three receptions for 20 yards. The Colts turned a blocked punt, two interceptions and a turnover on downs into touchdowns. The Raiders dropped to 4-1.
Cowboys Soar Past Jets in High-Scoring Game
Dak Prescott threw four scoring throws, leading the Cowboys to a comfortable win over the Jets. The Cowboys scored on two 90-yard drives in the second period, even with missing four starters on the offensive line. Javonte Williams gained 135 yards and a touchdown and also hauled in a TD pass. Dallas, now 2-2-1, bounced back from a high-scoring draw against the Packers last Sunday. New York remain winless at 0-5 in Aaron Glenn's inaugural year as head coach.
Vikings Edge Browns in London Thriller
Vikings receiver Addison caught a short touchdown pass from the quarterback with under half a minute left to give Minnesota a win over the Cleveland Browns at the UK venue. The 10-play, 80-yard drive gave the Minnesota (3-2) a much-needed win on their historic international road trip, which started with a narrow defeat to the Steelers in Dublin last Sunday. It also spoiled Dillon Gabriel's debut as starter, as the Browns first-year player put his team (one win and four losses) in position to win by passing for two scores. Another first-year player Quinshon Judkins rushed for 110 rushing yards on 23 carries. Wentz shook off a shoulder injury that briefly forced him out and directed two scoring drives in the second half.
Panthers Stage Epic Comeback Against Dolphins
Carolina's quarterback passed for two touchdowns and Rico Dowdle rushed for 206 yards and a touchdown as the Carolina Panthers came back against the Dolphins in Charlotte. Young's quick throw to rookie tight end Mitchell Evans with under two minutes to play gave the Panthers (2-3) the decisive advantage as they matched the biggest rally to secure victory in team history by overcoming a 17-point hole. Young had a poor start, but he finished 19-for-30 passing for 198 yards with one pick. The backup, filling in for the sidelined starter, did his damage on the ground on 23 attempts, coming up four yards shy of the single-game franchise rushing record. Miami's quarterback threw 27 passes out of 36 for 256 yards with three scores and receiver Waddle gained 110 yards through the air on six receptions and scored a touchdown, but the Dolphins (one win and four losses) fell to zero wins and three losses in road games.
Saints Secure First Win Under New Coach
Spencer Rattler threw an 87-yard score to Rashid Shaheed, defensive back Howden returned a fumble the length of the field for a touchdown, and the Saints defeated the error-prone New York Giants for the Saints' initial win under first-year head coach Moore. Rattler earned his maiden win in 11 career starts, throwing for 225 passing yards without a turnover. New York's first-year signal-caller Dart, who secured his debut last week, passed for 202 passing yards and two touchdowns, but also committed errors three times. The Giants gave up possession five times in all, with none worse than when Bryan Bresee stripped ball carrier Skattebo, leading to Howden's TD. Each squad are one win and four losses.
