Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin has declared he is pulling out from the Irish presidential election right away.

He was set to be a candidate among three competing for Ireland's head of state, alongside TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

Nonetheless, Sunday night he announced in a statement that he "erred that was not in keeping with my character and his personal standards."

"Considering all these factors, I've chosen to withdraw from the election for president right away and reunite with my loved ones," he declared via a statement.

Further updates expected.
